LET'S BOYCOTT OUR INGRATE ‘ALLIES'

PARIS - Why doesn't Jacques Chirac, president of the whine and cheese club, just give his buddy Saddam Hussein an apartment on the Place Vendome?

And make Baghdad an honorary suburb of Paris?

Again, Paris is burning. But now it's aflame with anti-Americanism, ignorance, arrogance and jealousy.

"Dumb move from your people, the way this thing is with Saddam Hussein," said Parisian Oliver Moos. "And your president is very, very strange."

Of course, Moos hates America. Ten days ago, he retired on a full pension from IBM at 55. A shame how those U.S. companies exploit their workers.

Marion Lavelatte says, "George Bush wants to take the French to war. Never."

I can hear the sigh of relief at the Pentagon. Who wants to be in a foxhole with a French soldier?

Raffaelle Guy-Favretto is a bubbly high-school student who soon will be studying law at the Sorbonne. "Whatever you say about Saddam Hussein, and there is no democracy, do I want democracy in Iraq or do I want to be dead? I'd rather be alive and not have democracy in Iraq."

Raffaelle, hang your head in shame. Ask your grandparents where France would be if Americans who were your age in 1941 felt that way.

Youri Agvilaniv, 23, is a history major. "Yes, there is anti-Americanism in France, and yes there is jealousy from the French. Simply put, both France and America want to become leaders of the world," he said.

When were the French leaders of the world? "They were for centuries."

No one is that old.

But I'm old enough to remember the sacrifice in blood Americans made so these students can study in their native language.

Philip Jutrass, a 20-year U.S. Army veteran who fought on the beaches of Normandy, has lived in France for 33 years.

"In 1966, Gen. DeGaulle wanted to throw us servicemen off the bases in France," he said. He recalled how the State Department answered, fine, but we'll take with us the bodies of the 60,000 Americans buried in France who died to save your country.

"DeGaulle was no dummy," Jutrass said. "It would have caused millions of big-spending Americans to give France a big miss. DeGaulle never said another word."

Soon after that outrage, John Carroll, who owned Carroll's Restaurant on the Upper East Side, put his money where his mouth was. He poured into the gutter every single ounce of French wine that he carried. It caught on. Restaurants just would not serve French wine.

Fast-forward to 2003. Let's do it again. Let's stop buying French wine. Let the restaurants in Paris serve it with plates of chicken francaise.

The same for the Germans, the new anti-American allies of France. If you're rich, who needs a Mercedes-Benz when you can get a Rolls-Royce, a Jaguar, a Cadillac or a Lincoln? And if you're not so rich, who needs a Volkswagen when you can buy a Ford?

Let's see how fast Jacques Chirac, the president of the whine and cheese club, and Gerhard Schroeder, the German leader whose people enjoy a united Berlin thanks to President Ronald Reagan (news - web sites), react to that one.

A boycott? Mais oui and jawohl.
