A sheriff's deputy is under arrest, accused of taking
marijuana that was planted by investigators.
Edgar Barrios was under investigation by the Broward County
Sheriff's Office after deputies received information that
Barrios was possibly involved in narcotics tampering.
As part of their investigation, BSO detectives parked a car in
the 4800 block of N.W. 24 Court in Lauderdale Lakes last
Thursday night.
Detectives put two cardboard boxes containing 40 pounds of
marijuana inside the car. They then placed an anonymous phone
call to BSO, reporting the "abandoned car."
As the deputy assigned to patrol that part of Lauderdale
Lakes, Barrios was dispatched to check out the abandoned car.
With BSO detectives watching, Barrios checked the car, found
the boxes of marijuana, and removed them from the car, placing
them in the back seat of his marked patrol car. Barrios then
had the car towed away, according to detectives.
Investigators said that Barrios did not notify his supervisor
of the narcotics and did not turn the marijuana into the BSO
Evidence Unit, which is standard procedure.
Barrios reportedly had a satisfactory record over his past
five years with the sheriff's office. He has not yet made a an
official statement, but it is believed that he acted alone.
Barrios is charged with evidence tampering and cannabis
trafficking. He was released on $76,000 bond. He is suspended
with pay while the investigation continues.
