HAMILTON MAY FACE A

The punishment levied against Giant defensive tackle Keith
Hamilton for his latest drug arrest could be as severe as a
six-game suspension, depending on the specifics of his
violation of the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy.
Hamilton's fate could be determined by where he was in the
league's Intervention Program when he was stopped early
Thursday morning and arrested for a variety of drug offenses.
"He could possibly be looking at a fine, suspension or being
put back in the [intervention] program," said Greg Aiello, the
NFL's vice president of public relations.
At 12:48 a.m. Thursday, Hamilton was stopped on Interstate 287
in Harding Township, N.J., and arrested for possession of
cocaine, less than 50 grams of marijuana and for possession of
In May 1999, Hamilton pleaded guilty to driving under the
influence of cocaine after an arrest in November of 1998 while
he was driving on the George Washington Bridge.
This second infraction could move Hamilton into Stage 2 of the
NFL's Intervention Program, which could result in a fine of
four game checks (or a four-game suspension if he was already
fined in Stage 1).
However, Hamilton - who turns 32 tomorrow - might have been
out of the program entirely, as a player in Stage 1 who passes
every drug test for two years can be given a clean slate. If
this turns out to be Hamilton's second infraction while in
Stage 2, he could be facing a six-game ban.
