Jeff Parish To Drug
Test Students
The Jefferson Parish School District announced Tuesday at a
news conference that it will begin mandatory drug testing next
school year.
Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick called it a
historic step in the fight against teen drug abuse.
The program initially will involve any public school student
who participates in "strenuous extracurricular activities,"
including athletics and cheerleading, school officials said.
Two other schools, Ehret and East Jefferson, will offer drug
testing for any student under a volunteer basis.
The district expects to spend about $400,000 next year on the
program, which will test about 5,000 students. The program
likely will be expanded.
The American Civil Liberites Union opposes the testing, saying
the money would be better spent elsewhere.
Critics also said the test, which examines hair strands for
residue of drugs taken in the past 90 days, does not catch
evidence of alcohol and tobacco use, which is more common than
hard drug use among teens, statistics show.
